Five fantastic French holiday destinations
Those looking for cheap holidays should consider France as a holiday destination, as it caters to people of all ages, interests and budget. The country is one of the most popular places for Britons to visit, so no matter where you go you can be certain of having a fantastic time.
There are many wonderful places to visit, however the first that probably comes to most people’s minds is Paris.
As both the country’s capital and its largest city, there are plenty of world-famous attractions for you to take in here, including the Notre Dame cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe.
The city is full of sightseeing opportunities, but for a truly memorable French holiday there is perhaps no better place to head to than the Eiffel Tower.
Standing 324 metres tall, you can take a ride up the famous structure where you will be able to drink in panoramic views of the city below. Open 365 days a year, it should be possible to take in a trip to the Eiffel Tower whenever you decide to visit Paris. Gone are the days when flying to France was unaffordable, as there are now cheap flights to Paris available on a daily basis from most UK airports.
Culture vultures will also find plenty to spark their interest in the city. Home to one of the world’s most famous museums in the Louvre, a wide range of Egyptian, Roman and Islamic art can be viewed at the cultural institution. However, there are dozens of other museums that are also well worth exploring.
Just outside Paris is the town of Marne-la-Vallee – home of Disneyland. People of all ages are sure to love visiting the resort, whether you want to find out more about how the latest Hollywood blockbusters are made or wish to meet your favourite Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
By visiting Disneyland Park – which is split into five separate zones, Fantasyland, Discoveryland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Main Street, USA – you can go on a range of adrenalin-pumping rollercoasters and other rides, although there are also attractions suitable for younger children.
For a fantastic French holiday in the sun, why not visit Saint-Tropez? Situated in the French Rivera in the south of the country, the pleasant temperatures and golden beaches will provide you with ample opportunities to go sunbathing.
But spending your entire holiday on the beach means you will miss out on the resort’s many attractions. The Butterflies House museum that contains more than 20,000 species of the winged creatures, while the Musee de l’Annonciade – which is housed in a 16th century chapel – is home to paintings from the likes of Paul Signac and Henri Matisse.
Benedot in Brittany can also make for a fantastic beach holiday for all the family. Youngsters are bound to enjoy exploring the vast expanses of sand and rocky coves, while a trip to the Notre Dame de la Mer church could prove to be a fascinating day out.
Sport lovers should head to Trez beach where you can sail catamarans or go windsurfing, while you can also head out on a glass-bottomed boat to the nearby Glenan Islands archipelago.
For some particularly breathtaking views of the area, head to the resort’s lighthouse – just don’t forget to bring your camera!
Lastly – but by no means least – Lille can also be a fantastic French holiday destination. The country is famous for its vast cultural heritage and you will find this is in full force in the northern city.
The European Capital of Culture in 2004, Lille’s Palais des Beaux Arts is the largest museum in France outside of Paris and contains works by the likes of Goya, Monet, Donatello and Rembrandt.
You should also visit the Musee de l’Hospice Comtesse – which is located in a 15th century hospital – and the Wazemmes market, while the town hall and belfry has Unesco world heritage status.
